Every year in the NBA playoffs, teams with much better regular season records are humiliatingly defeated in the playoffs by lower seeded teams. Last year, the 6th seeded Brooklyn Nets coming off of a very disappointing regular season upset the 3rd seeded Toronto Raptors. The year before, the Denver Nuggets, a 57-win team with the coach of the year George Karl, were beat in 6 games by the Cinderella team in Golden State. Perhaps the most famous example occured in 1999, when the 8th seeded Knicks made it all the way to the NBA Finals, after beating conference powerhouses Miami, Atlanta, and Indiana. There are upsets every year in the playoffs, and these five teams are capable of pulling off this year’s. To qualify, a team must project to finish without home court advantage in the first round.
